1/13/18: Taking My First Cooking Class!

I woke up at 7:30 and ate breakfast, which was the usual: muesli, banana, and 2 passion fruits.

I had scheduled a 9 am cooking class at May Kaidee, so I headed over to the restaurant. When I got there, I found out the class had been canceled because apparently it was Children’s Day so the chef had taken her child to some Children’s Day event. They told me to come back in the afternoon to take the afternoon class.

I told Julien, who was taking the class with me, the news. We decided to just get breakfast somewhere instead. I had already eaten at the hostel, so I got a smoothie (it was just ok) while he had some sort of noodle dish.

After breakfast I walked back to the hostel and worked on the blog a little, then went for a 5 mile run. I don’t really enjoy running in Chiang Mai… it’s stressful and not really pleasant with all the cars zooming right by you, blowing gas straight into your face the entire time.

I ended my run at a grocery store where I bought some roasted kabocha and other veggies to put on my bread for a small lunch. In retrospect, I probably should have skipped lunch, given all the food to follow…

After lunch I went to the cooking class and made SO MUCH FOOD: tom yum, tom kai, green curry, massaman curry, pad thai, papaya salad, pumpkin hummus, spring rolls, and sticky rice. It was so much fun but I was DEADDDD by the end. Like so tired. Eating is exhausting, I guess.

Holding heaven <3

I think we used about 10 coconuts each in this class… there was coconut milk and coconut meat in pretty much everything we ate. Crazy but also amazing. I also loved it because you come home with a booklet with all the recipes of the food you created! Plus the teacher was super nice and hilarious. I vlogged the whole thing, so stay tuned! It’ll be on my YouTube channel in a few days.

Blue rice!

My favorites were tom yum (because duh) and the sticky rice. The rice was BLUE!! So crazy. They make it blue by soaking the rice with roselle & some type of blue flower. Surprised this blue sticky rice hasn’t made it to the NY food scene yet. It is just SCREAMING Instagram!!

We ended with a dance… if you can call it that. It was hilarious.

I got back to the hostel around 7 and just chilled with the hostel people. I met some South Africans (who were all really good looking but had girlfriends OF COURSE) who invited me to come out with them to a nearby bar. They had just finished a big cycling trip, going from Vietnam to Chiang Mai, so it was their celebration night. They were about 5 beers deep (each), and I wasn’t really drinking, but I went to the bar anyway because what else was I gonna do??! We chilled at the bar for 20 minutes or so, but they were a little too tipsy to be at such a chill bar so they got an uber to go downtown to a louder bar. I decided to go back to the hostel since I really didn’t feel like have a big night out and went to bed around midnight. Off to Pai tomorrow!!

  1. Blue Rice?? Count me In! Only question is once you eat it does it turn your teeth or anything else blue?
It might freak me out if I peed a blue streak afterwards😱
