Every time I post a pic of sweet potato fries on Instagram, I get a comment asking how I make them crispy.
To make them crispy, it basically comes down to two things.
- Boil for a few minutes first
- Don’t let them touch while baking.
Scroll down for the complete recipe. This is one of the simplest, most delicious meals, and is definitely one of my favorites. I eat this at least once a week, but I’d probably eat this everyday if I had the time.
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 45 minutes
Total time: 50 minutes
Ingredients:
- One large Japanese sweet potato
- Spices of your choice (I usually use garam masala, chili powder, salt, and cayenne pepper. Other options are nutritional yeast, cumin, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, etc… you get it.)
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Place sweet potato in a pot and fill with water
- Bring water to a boil, and let potato cook for 3-4 minutes
- Take potato out and run under cold water to cool
- Pat dry, then cut the potato into small, fry-shaped slices.
- Place slices in a large bowl, add spices, and shake around until the slices are evenly covered.
- Place on a baking sheet with parchment paper, making sure the pieces don’t touch (v. important for crispiness).
- Bake for 10-15 minutes, and flip once the side touching the pan is brown/slightly burnt.
- Bake for another 5 minutes.
- TAKE A PIC & POST ON IG!! I guarantee, with the right lighting, it will explode (case in point #1 and #2). The ‘grammers love this ish.
… #10 was kinda a joke.
ANYWAY… Enjoy with the dipping of your choice. I usually do some ketchup, BBQ sauce, guac, mustard, and/or hot sauce (usually a little of everything…).

Thank you for sharing your secrets!! I never would have known to boil them before. I need to try this next time!
Yeah!! It somehow really helps with the crispy factor. :)
